17 April 2022 - Balestrate - The inevitable Easter storm

There must be something about Easter that causes the weather to be bad. It doesn't seem to matter if Easter is early or late, or for that matter where we are in the world, the weather always does it's worst. We've mentioned snow and torrential rain before, and we also recall that about 15 years ago, when we were first in Sicily, also at Easter time, the weather was so bad that it blew the roof off one of the sports stadia in Palermo. This year was not that bad, but it did live up to the anticipation.

All of these were taken while the weather was good enough to go out, much worse later.

We were already nicely tucked up in Balestrate, knowing what was coming. We spent the Sunday morning on admin, chores, etc, while Chris went for a run. As it was merely windy and cold at this time, we went for a walk, through the town and down to the beach. Once there we could see the rain in the distance so returned to the boat, arriving before the rain.

During the afternoon, the wind rose and the rain came down increasingly hard. We were concerned about the passerelle (boarding plank) bashing into the electricity box on the pontoon, so we had already been adjusting the lines to skew the boat to keep them apart. This ultimately proved to be unsuccessful,  and after hearing the passerelle hit the box once, we raced out on deck to bring it back on board.  It was not the most elegant recovery of the passerelle, but it was made difficult by the strong wind and the urgency to make it safe. By the time we had finished this, Chris and I were both reasonably wet, so a partial change of clothing was needed.

As it was going to be Chris' last night with us, our plan had been to go out for a meal at a restaurant, but the ever increasing wind and rain made the prospect of walking 3/4 mile into town seem very unappealing. Fortunately we had food on board, so we chose to eat that over getting soaked. The boat was pulling at its mooring lines and bucking around a bit, but it did not stop us having a very pleasant meal, washed down with a good bottle of wine.
