What an amazing day, with lots of variety.
It started peacefully with flat calm in our anchorage, after a peaceful night. The wind and swell had dropped off completely. We slipped lines before breakfast and made our way out of the bay, dodging the fishing lines and fishing boats.
After we rounded the first headland the wind was building, but a little flukey, so we turned out to sea and soon picked up a clean breeze. We trucked along very comfortably for a few hours, best to windward. We only cracked off the wind briefly to dodge another fishing vessel.
By lunchtime the wind had built into a consistent force 5 and it felt that Equinox was having her first significant test of the season. She cut through the now meter high waves well, but when the wind increased further to force 6, we were pleased to have the harbour in sight.
Termini Imerese has a mile long harbour wall and to our great relief gave us immediate calm as we turned inside, so we had time to get ready to dock, within safe conditions. The marina is on one side of a large commercial harbour. A small ship was tied up inside the main harbour wall, and further in were a multitude of fishing boats, of various sizes.
When the wind built up further, in the evening to a complete hoolie, we felt more than a little relieved to have been able to park the boat in the calm that we had a the time. High winds are forecast for the night, tomorrow and Friday, so it feels great to be tucked up in a safe harbour. We have tied down everything that we can, so here’s hoping it all holds.
