Overnight, I was woken at regular intervals, by the noise and swell of ferries coming in and out, right past our berth. The marina in Messina is very exposed to the wind, that accelerates through the Straits, and the swell from the commercial traffic. So I was up before the alarm and couldn’t wait to get going. Messina, the town and the marina, were a great disappointment.

We were on our way at 7.30am, under a rather brighter sky than yesterday. We played ferry dodging further along the Strait, before being out alone, motoring along a rather attractive piece of coastline, towards Taormina. During the season, there are mooring buoys at Taormina, from which you can get a water taxi to the town, but, after phoning the guy who administers this, we learned that the buoy field doesn’t open until 15th May. George was very helpful and suggested we head to Riposto, just another 10 miles down the coast. We were very happy take his advice. We arrived early afternoon with, other than non response on the radio, an excellent welcome. The marinaros were the best we’ve experienced so far in Sicily.
Riposto is a working town, not a holiday destination, but the new marina is impressive in size and facilities. We are tucked up, right inside, with no swell at all. Having walked only 500 metres from the boat, we found two bakeries, three fish stalls, a greengrocers and a supermarket. What could be better, especially as I am writing at 6.30 in the evening, while we are having sundowners on deck with a view of Mount Etna.
