5 April 2022 - Trapani - Living on board

We checked out of the hotel this morning and carried our remaining bags to the boatyard. The hotel has been a boon. It is owned by the same group as operate the yard, and is only 5 minutes walk away. This is incredibly handy, when compared with the distance we have had to cover at some of the accommodation we have used while the boat is launched elsewhere.

Equinox (middle) now back in the water

Now that we are back in the water a whole new task list becomes necessary and possible. Guys came to check the generator running. They had serviced it over the winter, but it needed a water supply for the final checks.

We have also had to cleanse the water tanks, which involves filling them with a chemical added to the water, letting them stand for several hours and then emptying and filling them twice more. It is a good thing that there is no water shortage here, as the process uses about 1500 litres of water.

While chatting to the boatyard administrator and his manager, we had asked where there is a large supermarket, as we need a considerable restocking. He suggested somewhere and then asked how we would get there and back. We said we would probably walk there and get a taxi back. They immediately said that they would have a guy drive us, wait and then bring us back.  This duly happened which made the whole process really easy. The people here are so kind and friendly. As with every other location that we stop at for any length of time, we build a community of friends who will help us. Even the most dour of the boatyard guys now gives us a smile when we pass him.

I had a shock while we were paying in the supermarket. We had bought a lot, hopefully meaning that we will only have to resupply on a small scale with fresh food as we go on. The cashier realised that we spoke English and very helpfully tried to tell us the amount owed after everything had been scanned. I knew that it was a big shop, but was aghast when he said that it was one thousand and sixty euros. Fortunately, when I looked at the printed statement it said one hundred rather than one thousand. I told him what had happened and we both laughed. Helping coach people's English is all part of the service we offer.

We ended the day by going to the place that gave us coffee on Sunday and had a take away. We were too tired to want to cook and looking forward to our first evening meal and night on board.
