9 April 2022 - Trapani

I woke about 6.00am. I think it’s because that is when there is the first hint of dawn. I need to start wearing my eye pad at night. However this morning I didn’t mind waking early, as I wanted to get to the fish market. I left about 8.00am and ran the little under 3kms there, along the promenade, past the queues for the fast jet ferries to the Egadi Islands. Steve stayed behind, just in case the riggers turned up. The fish market was in full swing. I had the impression that each boat had their own stall and having spotted some Bream, my favourite fish, that was decision made. Again the people are so helpful and friendly. It they see you struggling to understand the numbers, which I’m still getting to grips with, they tell you the price in English. I would love it not to be necessary, and I’m getting better, but still take a while to process what has just been said.

It’s been another glorious day, but with a cold wind. No shorts today.

Erice shrouded in cloud

We made another trip to the bakery and what has become our favourite greengrocer. The staff are all getting to know us and the interchange with them is a delight.

Supersized strawberries

The busy street outside the boatyard entrance has further little trucks arriving with produce from the countryside. The "orange" van is still there and during the last couple of days, there have also been guys selling potatoes and butter beans, still in their shells. Unfortunately they are in bags far too big for us to use. All the fruit and veg is supper sized. I have never seen such big bulbs of fennel, for example. There are also vegetables that I have never seen before and wouldn’t have a clue what to do with, but, I’ll probably buy some to try. With broccoli, they sell the whole plant, leaves, stalks and all, not just the flower, so I’m endeavouring to use as much of it as possible. Apparently April is the season for local strawberries, so they are abundant too.
