17 May 2022 - Riposto

Agnone had been a very pretty place to stop, but overnight the wind largely died away, but the swell didn't. The waves were not big, but just enough to make the boat roll uncomfortably, as we lay across them. It was sufficient to wake each of us at different times in the night, and I think we were both less than fully rested when the alarm clock went off.  It was one of those mornings where the decision to just get going to escape the rolling was easy to take. Breakfast en route.

There was no wind, so we motored all the way, but at least we had a great view of Etna to divert us. It was only in the last hour that there was enough wind to sail, but we felt that it was not worth setting the sails for a such a short distance.

The sea had been quite wavy all day, and we had given ourselves extra time to prepare to enter port, and it was probably just as well. Everything was ready and we were following the line of the harbour wall round to the entrance, when we spotted some masts moving inside the harbour. It turned out to be a large gulet type boat. We slowed and waited to see which way it would turn, but it kept on coming straight at us.  We took the necessary action to avoid a collision, but saw that as it came past, there seemed to be only one person on board. He was engaged in tidying things up and not keeping any sort of lookout. The boat must have been on autopilot and we doubted the guy even knew that we were there.  I'll not repeat some of the names that we called him.

We've arrived back in Riposto for a few days. We will leave Sicily from here, and head east across the south of Italy.  Our first task as we arrived was to visit the fuel dock to top up the fuel for the first time this year. It will be anchorages for a few days, so we also need to make sure we have enough provisions and then wait for a weather window.  But first, an early night to make up for last night.
