4 May 2022 - Riposto

We went for a run before breakfast this morning. That’s a first for quite a while. It was a glorious morning and we joined the other joggers and dog walkers, going alongside the road adjacent to the sea, south of town. The rocks on the shore are black; obviously covered with lava dust from Etna. It’s a delight to be out in the cool of the morning.

We were treated to a great view of Etna as we ran

We went to a new greengrocer, who was a fabulously cheery chap and who took great delight in our few words of Italian, or Sicilian, as he put it. I am still in awe of the quality of the produce here. From there we also tried a new fish shop and again were spoiled for choice but bought bass for supper tonight. It says something about the Sicilian diet, that there are five fish shops and one butcher in this area of town.

Back at the boat we have ticked off more maintenance and mid afternoon the guys turned up from the yard with the new part for the engine, two days earlier than they had estimated. Problem fixed.

Steve pumped up the tender and had another go at getting the outboard to work, which is almost there but not quite. That will have to wait for another day. He had managed to buzz up and down the marina which bursts of about five seconds, which looked really comical and, just as well he managed to get back, as he hadn’t taken the oars with him. He’s also been part way up the mast to fix the deck flood light.

I have now tried out the magical product that the boat service guys in Trapani gave us, to get rid of rust from various bits of metal. It is very satisfying seeing the rust disappear like magic. It has struck me, though, that it was a punishment at school, to have to clean areas with a toothbrush, and now I am taking delight in doing just that.

A happy day, and all the best to make Equinox look and perform at her best.
