2 June 2022 - Bari

We were up and about early and having done all of the formalities yesterday, we were able to slip away as soon as we were ready. We were grateful that there was no wind to worry about, as the next door motor boat was unprotected by fenders, and being a very different shape to us, it would have been hard for us to protect both vessels.

Just how much power do you need on the back of a rib?

When we were clear of the marina and the number of small fishing boats outside, we were able to get the sails up and use the gentle wind.  It was coming from the wrong direction, pretty well exactly where we wanted to go, but it did not matter as we had no time constraints. We tacked well out away from the coast and then back again a couple of times. We were trying to tack with the advantageous wind shifts, but this did not seem to work out as well as I had hoped. As soon as we tacked the shift went against us, so we arched our way forward. It was a glorious day for sailing. Warm, gentle wind and flat water, exactly what Mediterranean sailing should be.

As we got closer to Bari, it all got a bit busier. We subsequently found that it was a public holiday and clearly everyone with a boat had decided to go our for the day.  The range of different approaches to sailing was diverse, from those who seemed to be doing race training to those who just went out a bit, the took the sail down and drifted.

The entrance to Bari is from the north west and there is a traffic separation scheme, so we had to go all the way past before turning back and entering the port. There was no serious shipping coming and going, so we probably could have just entered from any direction, but our training says that is not what you do, so we went by the book.

We docked in Bari, with a good view back towards the town.  We will explore tomorrow.
