The storm winds started in the very early hours of the morning. The wind howled sufficiently that I had very little sleep. We knew we were safe in the marina, so there was no stress; it was just the noise of it that kept me awake.
We had taken the passarelle onboard, so that it wouldn’t get damaged but we put it out again in the morning, so I could get to the market for food supplies, while Steve stayed with the boat. My foulie sailing jacket saved me from getting absolutely soaked in the torrential rain on the way in. Fortunately, by the time I was returning, armed with shopping, the rain had stopped for a while.
For the rest of the morning and the afternoon, the gale force winds blew and the downpours were accompanied by thunder and lightning. It was all quite spectacular. By early evening, the sky was turning blue and people started emerging from their boats. The newly arrived charterers, having presumably been sheltering in the coffee shops, also started to arrive.
The
temperature had dropped to 12C, so we indulged in the novelty of putting the
boat heating on. I wouldn’t have expected that in September. However, the sea
was calm and we could retire expecting a much more peaceful night.
