2 September 2022 - Molat

We swung into action to make the boat reading for our departure and were ready by mid morning. The marinaros came to suggest seeing us out, even before we had gone to ask them. The berth is a tricky one to get out of, especially when there is a cross wind. They were superb, with one guy in the tender pulling the bow round and another holding us close to the boat next door until there was enough space to swing. We were on our way on the start of our Autumn adventures.

The views of the mountains in the distance are spectacular

The sea area around Biograd is incredibly pretty so it’s not a surprise it’s a holiday area. There are several small islands to navigate around, then once clear into more open water, the sails were up. We enjoyed some lovely sailing for the first couple of hours, but were having to tack back and forth across the channel, because the wind was coming directly from the direction we needed to go, so weren’t making enough progress towards our destination. One of my parents sayings of “you’ll have it dark”, sprung to mind, but, having cracked on with making our way under engine, we arrived in Molat Bay, a large inlet on the Island of Molat, by early evening.

The bay narrows to a point and we had hoped to anchor up near the point, but on three attempts, the anchor would not hold. We think that either the sand is rock hard, or that there is only a thin layer of sand on top of rock. Not worries though, there was a buoy field inside an island, close to the little hamlet, so we were safe and secure, attached to a buoy in no time. We subsequently read that there would have been a mooring fee in bay, even if we had anchored, and had we seen that before we wouldn’t have even tried to anchor. Attaching to a buoy is by far the easiest mooring there is, for arrival and departure.
