20 September 2022 - Artaturi

Our plans have had to change. There is more bad weather forecast at the weekend, and in the north where we are, it is expected to be worse than further south. After reviewing our options, we decided that the best place to be was back at our current "home" port in Biograd. We will retrace our steps to get here, missing some of the places that we want to spend time, and possibly visit them later, when the weather gods are more friendly.

We slipped our lines and motored away from our buoy in peace and quiet. One of our new friends had already gone, and the others were preparing to leave, saying that they would try to follow us for as long as possible.

Once outside the shelter of the bay, it was apparent that there was rather more wind to play with than there had been in the bay. We initially put up full main sail, but immediately agreed that it was going to be too much and put a reef in. The conditions were fantastic and we were covering the ground very quickly. It what has become known to me as a C.O.B. day (cap on backwards). I lost one over the side a week or two ago, the wind caught under the brim and the cap just blew straight off my head.  It is never worth going back for them, you would not find it after the time it would take to slow and turn the boat. So, as on many previous occasions it was time to reverse the new cap.

The view of the islands and mountains in the distance are spectacular

We powered along until the last 6 or 7 miles, but which time the wind had dropped, the reefs had been shaken out and there still wasn't enough wind to maintain a reasonable speed, so we resorted to engine power.

There was more wind forecast overnight and we wanted to find somewhere sheltered from the right direction, so we went back to Artaturi, where we had anchored with some difficulty before.  This time the anchor bit the first time. We were still wary, so Tricia went with mask and snorkel to check and reported that it was well dug in. We were confident that we could withstand the wind that was forecast.
