Monday and Tuesday were maintenance days. Sometimes it’s good that the weather forces you to have time for these things.
We had to run a new reefing line for the mainsail, which involves hoisting the sail fully. We thought we would have enough time whilst what little wind there was, was on the nose. But as ever, the task at hand was not as easy as you think it should be and, while the sail was up, the wind changed direction by 180 degrees, so was now on the stern. This is not good when you are in a marina, so we had to drop the sail on the deck as quickly as we could. We could not understand why dropping was proving to be so difficult, until Marko arrived and saw that one of the cars in the headboard was not running freely. It meant that it’s friction was stopping the sail from coming down easily. This must have happened very recently. After a good spray with Teflon lubricant and checking on the ball bearings inside the car, it was running freely again.
We lashed the sail to the deck, to keep it safe for the next lot of strong wind. We will put it back on when we have a period of no wind.
